Care for Magical Creatures: Less Obvious Self Care to Do for Yourself

When you listen to most regenerative ecologists ponder the state of the world and Her inhabitants, they almost always talk about connection. Essentially, that unwell or broken systems are often disconnected ones, and the path to healing them, to righting them, to regnerating them, is almost always to connect them to themselves.

In practice for us humans - and this is more true than not for most people - we delegate so much. And rightly so, specialization is the hallmark of an advanced civilization, but so many things - vital-to-our-wellness things - simply cannot be delegated. We must connect and do them for ourselves and those we love.

Of course, there are the obvious tenets of caring for oneself: eating whole, unprocessed, ideally local and seasonal foods, activity (like steps, standing in our days, and working out), meditating, and avoiding blue light early in the morning and late at night.

Yet, there are quite a few other things we can be doing for ourselves that might be a little less obvious….

Let the Sun Kiss Your Belly - According to one study, sunning your belly had a positive impact on your gut microbiome.

Watch the Sunset - Sure, we know waking up and getting a little early morning sun hanging low in the sky is amazing for setting our circadian rhythm - but did you know catching the sunset can also help keep your circadian clock on time? According to American neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Andrew Huberman, there’s something about watching the sunset that helps us sleep better even if we are exposed to some blue light from our various electronic screens.

Orgasms - Give them to yourself, receive from or share them with a lover - orgasms are a cascade of so many beneficial hormones, not to mention delicious pleasure.

Schedule Dates - Whether a romantic dinner at home or a catch up session with a dear friend, we are social creatures who biologically require connection.

Plan Adventures - Don’t miss the memo on the party that is life - plan adventures by yourself or with loved ones. Not only are they fun, you’ll learn something about yourself and anyone who travels with you.

Acts of Kindness - We fling compliments around like confetti to our friends and family, but how often do we take a moment to offer ourselves an honest compliment or give ourselves a genuine peptalk? We recommend offering yourself an honest compliment with each application of your KYPRIS ritual - after all, neurons that fire together, wire together - so might as well learn to love yourself even more.
